Darwin’s On The Origin of Species was a momentous event for science and a controversial break with past conceptions of nature and humanity. This course will embed the idea of evolution in a complex unfolding of scientific and cultural trends. We will set the stage in 18th century notions of human progress, the deep time of geology, and the strong linkage between God’s design and the laws of nature. We will examine Darwin’s development, through his life of exploration and theorizing. Peeling away myths surrounding an iconic figure, we will also consider the role other Victorian naturalists. We will end with the reaction to OnThe Origin of Species and the ensuing scientific and social impact of theories of evolution, as they became mainstream science.
