As people age they are at risk of nutritional inadequacies at a time in life when specific nutrient intakes often need to be higher. We will discuss the role of nutrition in promoting healthy aging and in lowering the risk of age-related health concerns such as cognitive decline and dementia, loss of muscle mass and strength, and compromised immunity. Achieving optimal nutrient intake can also help to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and inflammation. Important nutrients to pay attention to during aging include protein, omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, vitamins B6, B12, and E, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Many older adults are not getting enough of these nutrients. This presentation will provide practical nutritional advice on food and supplements to help attendees meet their nutrient goals and to stay well as they age.
