Many expressions originating in the scientific realm have entered our popular lexicon. A number of these are misinterpretations of their scientific basis. "Laser focus," a "blue moon," and "black ice" represent a few of the more egregious of these. We will examine these and other expressions and show how their common interpretations belie their scientific origin. Along the way, we will have to explain a variety of topics including stimulated emission of radiation, Rayleigh scattering of light, optical properties of water, and others. Though taught by a physics professor, no prior knowledge of physics is required for this lecture designed for a popular audience.
