This short course aims to introduce you to writers who are largely unknown to North American audiences, but who are considered giants of the field, such as Jorge Luis Borges, Ana María Matute, Camilo José Cela, Horacio Quiroga, and others. Selected writers are from Spain and the Americas, and include two Nobel laureates. We will look at genres and trends in short stories, as we also examine cultural contexts of our selections. Note: readings for each class are optional and will be emailed to the participants.
