Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli: “Life Is a Winking Light in the Darkness”

For four decades, Japan’s Studio Ghibli has expanded the possibilities of animation in both storytelling and visuals. In this retrospective, we will look at some of their best work, with stories ranging from colorful family fantasy to quiet slice-of-life and complex allegories for the relationship between man and nature. Films discussed include the Oscar-winning Spirited Away (2002), the poignant Whisper of the Heart (1995), and the nostalgic From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), along with clips and discussion of other Ghibli works. All films are available for streaming on HBO Max (as well as other streaming services); students are expected to watch the films outside of class for discussion.
