Safety Hot Topics: Debunking the Myths for Engineers and Managers, on Projects and in the Workplace

This course will cover important concepts in the realm of engineering project implementation, construction and workplace safety. The comprehensive knowledge attained through this course can be vital in formulating proactive system engineering design premise so that safety pitfalls and gaps can be precluded in the design phase of engineered systems. Discussion will begin with the importance of safety, supported by safety statistics and clarification of “myths” about the need for safe practices at work and at home. You will be introduced to most of the mainstream PPE (personal protective equipment) and their proper use. The importance of workplace environmental safety and health--namely, indoor air quality--will be covered, with an emphasis on HVAC systems and mold issues, as pertinent to residential, commercial, and industrial operations. Discussion will cover proven safety best practices that engineers and technical managers find useful in successful implementation of projects and in safe operations of workplace, as well as the safety risk analysis process in the engineering design phase, on projects and in operations. The latter part of the course will deal with the one of the most significant hazards, in almost any environment--fire. You will be introduced to fire classifications and associated fire extinguishers, as well as hazards or arc flash (NFPA 70E) and lockout tagout best practices.
